India–Australia ECTA & Why Australian Brands Source from India

The Trade Deal That Changed Indian Garment Economics for Australia

📄

India–Australia ECTA: 0% Import Duty Since December 2022

The India–Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which entered into force on 29 December 2022, was a watershed moment for Australian fashion brands sourcing from India. Under ECTA, most Indian textile and apparel products (HS chapters 50–63) entered the Australian market at 0% import duty — eliminating a tariff burden that had previously made Indian garments less competitive versus duty-free Bangladesh or Vietnam imports.

The practical impact: for every $10,000 of Indian garments you import, you now save $500–$1,000 in duty compared to pre-ECTA rates (which were 5–10% depending on category). For a boutique importing 300 pieces per season, this can mean thousands of dollars in annual savings — effectively funding an extra production run.

We issue a Certificate of Origin confirming Indian manufacture with every shipment. Your Australian customs broker uses this to claim the ECTA 0% duty rate at Port Botany, Port of Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth.

Beyond duty savings, India offers Australian fashion brands something uniquely valuable: a manufacturing ecosystem that combines price competitiveness with artisan craft quality. Australia's fashion consumers increasingly want differentiated, story-rich products — hand block prints, natural fabrics, artisan embroidery — that are simply unavailable from generic mass-manufacturing hubs like China or Bangladesh.

India's natural fabric expertise is a particularly strong fit for the Australian market. Australia's warm-to-hot climate across most population centres drives consistent demand for breathable linen, cotton, cotton-silk, and lightweight wovens — fabrics that India produces in world-class quality from its vertically integrated textile ecosystems in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the Delhi NCR region.

Seona Couture specifically serves Australian boutique owners, D2C e-commerce brands, Indian diaspora fashion retailers, and uniform suppliers — clients who need craft quality, low MOQ, and a manufacturing partner who responds in their working hours, speaks plain English, and delivers on time.

Natural Fabrics That Suit Australian Climates

Australian fashion consumers have an instinctive preference for breathable, natural, tactile fabrics — particularly in the warm coastal and tropical markets that account for the majority of Australia's population. India's fabric ecosystem is uniquely positioned to supply exactly this.

🌾 Pure Linen

Sourced from our Delhi NCR fabric network. 100% linen in weights from 100–200 gsm. The single most popular fabric for our Australian clients — breathable, textural, durable. Available in 60+ colourways.

🌿 Linen–Cotton Blend

55/45 and 70/30 linen-cotton blends that offer linen's breathability with cotton's softness and crease resistance. Ideal for resort and casualwear ranges targeting Brisbane, Perth, and Darwin markets.

☁️ Cotton Voile & Lawn

Ultra-lightweight plain-weave cottons. Perfect for flowing summer dresses, blouses, and resort tops. Available OEKO-TEX certified. Indian production quality rivals European mill standards at 30–40% lower cost.

Cotton–Silk Blend

Luxurious silk-finish with cotton's practicality. 60/40 and 70/30 cotton-silk. Particularly popular for Australian occasion wear, formal dresses, and elevated casual pieces in the $80–$200 retail range.

🍃 GOTS Organic Cotton

India is the world's largest producer of organic cotton. GOTS-certified options from our supply network support Australian brands positioning on sustainability. Certificate provided for retail and ESG reporting.

🌀 Georgette & Chiffon

Lightweight silk and polyester georgette and chiffon — India's specialty export fabrics. Used extensively in occasion wear, boho dresses, and resort styles. India produces these at world-best quality and price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Australian Fashion Brands Ask Before Ordering

Under the India–Australia ECTA, your Australian customs broker lodges an import entry claiming the ECTA preferential duty rate. To do this, they need a Certificate of Origin (CoO) confirming the goods are of Indian origin and manufactured in India. We issue this CoO document with every shipment. You present it to your broker along with the commercial invoice and packing list. The broker submits it to the ABF (Australian Border Force) and the 0% rate is applied — you pay no import duty on the garment value. Without the CoO, your broker would apply the standard MFN duty rate (typically 5–10% depending on garment type). We issue CoOs as standard at no additional charge.
Under Australian Consumer Law, all garments sold at retail in Australia must carry: (1) Fibre content — percentage of each fibre by weight, using generic fibre names (e.g. "100% Linen" or "60% Cotton, 40% Polyester"); (2) Care instructions — using ISO 3758 care symbols as adopted in AS/NZS 1957; (3) Country of origin — "Made in India" as a permanent part of the care label; (4) The supplier's name — either the Australian importer's name and address, or a registered code. We produce woven or printed care labels covering all four requirements as standard in our private label service. The supplier name field can carry either your Australian business details or your brand name.
This is genuinely one of our core strengths. Australia is home to approximately 800,000 people of Indian descent — heavily concentrated in Sydney's western suburbs (Parramatta, Blacktown, Ryde), Melbourne's outer east (Dandenong, Springvale, Box Hill), Brisbane's south (Sunnybank, Eight Mile Plains), and Perth's northern suburbs. This community has consistent, high-value demand for authentic Indian occasion wear — Eid and Diwali lehengas, wedding sherwanis, salwar suits, and Indo-western fusion. We produce these with genuine Indian craft techniques: real zardozi embroidery, hand block printing on cotton, kantha stitch quilting, and mirror work. We understand quality expectations from buyers who know what authentic Indian fashion looks like, and we produce accordingly.
We produce in whatever sizing convention your brand uses. The standard options for Australian women's fashion are: Australian numeric sizing (AU 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 / 18 / 20 / 22 / 24 / 26) or international alpha sizing (XS / S / M / L / XL / XXL / 3XL). Many Australian brands use both — numeric on the label with alpha on the hang tag. For men's: alpha (S / M / L / XL / XXL), chest/waist in centimetres, or collar size for shirts. For kidswear: age (0–3m, 3–6m, 6–12m, 1y, 2y, etc.) or height in centimetres. We maintain graded size charts for each convention and can adjust to your brand-specific fit measurements during sampling.
Yes. Australia's Modern Slavery Act 2018 requires companies with annual consolidated revenue of AUD $100 million or more to submit an annual Modern Slavery Statement describing modern slavery risks in their operations and supply chains. We provide: a Factory Overview document describing our workforce size, wage structure, working hours, and conditions; a Supplier Declaration confirming we do not use forced, bonded, or child labour; supply chain traceability from fabric mill to finished garment (fabric supplier details, trims suppliers); and an annual update to these documents. For brands below the AUD $100M threshold, we provide the same documentation on request as good supply chain practice — increasingly requested by Australian retailers and e-commerce platforms as part of their own Modern Slavery reporting.
Landed cost = FOB India price + air/sea freight + 0% ECTA duty + customs clearance fee. Example for a linen dress at AUD $12 FOB India (approx. ₹650), air-freighted at AUD $4.50/kg (say 0.35 kg per dress = AUD $1.58), 0% ECTA duty (compared to AUD $1.20 if duty applied at 10%), plus ~AUD $0.30 customs clearance allocation per unit at small volumes. Approximate landed cost: AUD $14–$15 per unit. At an Australian retail price of AUD $69–$89, this yields a landed-cost gross margin of approximately 80–85% before operating costs. We include a detailed landed cost estimate with every quotation.
Absolutely — we welcome Australian clients for factory visits. Our facility is in Greater Noida West, approximately 45 minutes from Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. Direct flights operate from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth to Delhi on Air India, Vistara, and Qantas codeshares. A typical factory visit agenda includes: manufacturing facility tour, quality inspection review, fabric market visit (Delhi's Nehru Place and Gandhi Nagar fabric markets are 30 minutes away), and a design and sampling session. Please give us 3 weeks notice so we can prepare production samples and arrange fabric swatches for your review. We recommend combining a factory visit with a Delhi fabric sourcing trip to see the depth of our material options in person.
